European Framework for Work Experience

The European Framework for Work Experience (EFWE) is a European standard for the assessment of students’ employability skills developed through paid, unpaid and voluntary work experience undertaken whilst studying.

The project was initially funded by the European Commission’s Leonardo da Vinci programme, and co-ordinated by CRAC. CRAC’s partners in the EFWE project come from across the UK, Germany, Finland, Belgium, Spain and Romania.

The framework itself indicates the key stages of work experience, from preparation through to doing and finally to reflection. It is based on the perspectives of the student, the careers practitioner and the employer. Continue reading

The role of the undergraduate work placement in developing employment competencies

In this paper, Matthew Hall, Helen Higson and Nicola Bullivant from Aston Business School examine the role of the work placement in developing ‘soft’ competences among management undergraduates. They draw upon a 5-year survey in which students and their employers are asked about the personal development and performance of the students during their placement year.

The authors’ findings provide confirmation of the value of the placement year, particularly as an opportunity for building self confidence, and for developing the inter-personal competences necessary to integrate effectively in a collaborative environment. In contrast, competences necessary for the effective performance of individual roles, and in particular competences relating to leading, persuading and influencing others, are less highly rated.
